French Diving Part 1

Only 10 days after I got back to work I was back on holiday again! This time I flew to Nice, to go diving off the south coast of France :) The night before (10th September) I went with G&A to watch Last Night of the Proms... I hadn't realised we were just going to a friend of theirs to watch it on TV. I thought we were actually going to Hyde Park, or somewhere to watch it on a big screen. Towards the end they play a song where everyone waves their Union Jack flag - it felt VERY wrong waving that flag. There weren't enough stars on it! That night I spent the night at Gatwick, as I had an early check-in the next morning. The airport at Nice is directly on the water, and as we were landing it looked like we were just going to land on the water, I couldn't see the runway until we were nearly landed!

On my walk to Golfe Juan one morning. It's actually about
8.30am, looks a lot earlier though!
Anyway, once I got out of the airport I had to travel to Juan les Pins. I had been given the suggestion of getting a taxi from the airport to Saint Augustine train station, and then catch a train to Juan les Pins from there. Lets just say asking the taxi driver to take me to the train station was a bit of a disaster, but it wasn't helped by the fact that I got the RUDEST taxi driver in the world!! He was huffing and puffing that I only wanted like a 10 min journey, and my French was fail-worthy :( He did, however, cheer up when I payed him - maybe the tip I gave him helped. He didn't really deserve a tip, but I just wanted the guy off my back.

Once I arrived in Juan les Pins it was a short walk to the hotel. Again my French was fail-worthy and I wasn't quite sure what name my reservation was under, as Alex, from Diving Diamond had sorted all that out. It didn't help that the guy at reception didn't speak much English. Eventually we figured out which room I was staying in, but I had a little bit of a wait before I could have a lie down (remember I had spent the night at the airport). I had a bit of a walk around, and thoroughly enjoyed the warmth and sunshine. I had a bit of a rest once I got back to the hotel, and I remember thinking how tiny the bathroom was. After the rest I had to find my way to Golfe Juan, where I was meeting the guys from Diamond Diving. Alex had told me it was a 30 min walk away.... 45 is more like it!
They sweep the beaches, which I find a bit weird, but leaves
great birdy footprint tracks :)

Boats at Golfe Juan
After meeting the team at Diamond Diving, it was time for my dive briefing and finally time for the first dive of the course. The first 2 dives were confined water dives, so we were just diving off the beach in water less than 2 m deep.  After that first dive I joined everyone for a drink, and then had a job finding somewhere to eat for dinner. France is an expensive place to eat!! After walking around for about 45mins trying to find somewhere to eat I finally settled on a 16EUR pasta and 5EUR coke (yes, i paid 5 euros for a coke :S). Granted, it was a huge bowl of pasta, but I would have liked to have paid half the price, seeing as it wasn't actually that great, and I only ate half of it! After that first night I started having fruit for breakfast, and my main meal at lunch, joining the Diamond Diving team at their local snack bar. I would then have something small, and cheap from the bakery. That night I went to bed really early, and had a good sleep in, as I didn't have to be in Golfe Juan until 10.30 the next morning. Which, was good, as I need the sleep, and slept like a log all night!!

On the Monday I had just 1 (my last) confined dive, and that was it for the day, as the boat was going in for service (i think!). After lunch I went for a walk into Antibes, on the search for an internet cafe, as I needed to print off something, so I could get my diving licence. It was only about a 20 minute walk into Antibes but by the time I had found an internet cafe, walked along the harbour looking at all the boats, and walked along the seafront, I had been walking for about 3 hrs!!

Notting Hill Carnival

Very colourful parade
Every August bank holiday (basically just a public holiday) the Notting Hill Carnival is held in West London. As I had a free day before I was back at work on the Tuesday, I decided to go. So, Tom and I caught the train/tube to Gillian and Veronica's, where we left our suitcases. It was also convenient as their place is only a few metres from the tube station, and all the happenings of the carnival! From one window you could just see the colourful parade. Another window had 'carnival views' as well... although not as enticing; it showed the portable urinals. Yes, that's right, a nice view of the urinals :S

LOTs of people
We went for a short walk were we got a fairly good view of the parade.. it was pretty packed! After watching the parade for a bit, I started to get hungry, so had some Caribbean 'jerk' chicken, which is basically BBQ'd chicken, but very tasty!! When I had bought my lunch I went back to meet up with Gill and Ronnie, but the police had made it a one way entry point only, and I was on the wrong side!! So I sent Gill a text and told her where I was, and stood under a tree waiting for her to figure out where I was.

After we had had enough of the carnival we went back to Gill's for a bit, and then had to figure out how to get back into central London. The tube station we got off was exit only, so Tom and I had to go walk for about 30 mins to get to an open station. Walking through the streets, the crowds were amazing - at one point we could hardly walk down the street it was that full. We literally had to push our way through all the people, which could have been slightly easier if the both of didn't have backpacks on! We finally got on the tube, I said goodbye to Tom, and headed back to Gran and Angus's, where I was spending my final night before     going back to work.

Also some very strange things :S

Walking the Rhein and other things

After we climbed all those stairs and had a good look around the cathedral, Tom and I went for a walk along the river. We did a LOT of walking while we were in Cologne, at one stage in the pouring rain - we had gone to a laundromat (I might have only been gone away for 3 nights, but Tom had been travelling already for a week, and still had a 17 day tour to follow!) and were looking for an internet cafe to waste the time while our washing was being done. I suggested waiting a bit, but we pushed on and after about 10mins of walking in the pouring rain found an internet cafe... of course the deluge stopped pretty much as soon as we set foot in the place! That night we had dinner in a shady looking pub, but it was cheap enough, and the schnitzel and chips were actually really good!

We didn't do much else in Cologne, the day after we arrived we went for another walk around Cologne and made it all the way to the zoo, then we walked back down to Cologne (actually up is probably more correct, as we were following the river upstream). That night we caught the train to Troisdorf Spich, where we were going to see Kati, who I hadn't seen in since January 2004, for her engagement party. When we got to her house there was shattered crockery all over the yard - plate, bowls, mugs, even an old sink had been smashed in the driveway.  Tom and I each got a mug to smash when we arrived, and can I say that it is an AWESOME tradition, though I don't pity the people who needed to clean up the mess!! Unfortunately I didn't get any photos from the night :(

Kati then took me around to say hello to her parents, grandparents and brother, who were all very happy to see me :) I didn't really get to see her as much as I would have liked, and have a good catchup as she was playing good hostess and mingling with everyone. But we were lucky that a nice couple spoke with us (in English... wouldn't have said much in German lol) and made the night really enjoyable. I also practiced drinking beer for my next trip to Oktoberfest. It was lucky that the local Cologne beer, Kolsch was quite drinkable. The Germans mix coke with their beer... but to be honest I didn't really like it. I'd take beer and lemonade any day! On the taxi ride back to the hotel I started talking to the diver (in German!) about how expensive smoking in Australia is - although I was tipsy, and I'm not sure how correct my German was, he seemed to get the idea, saying that he would have to quit if he smoked in Aus!

Soo many 'love locks'
Aside from walking the Rhine, and around Cologne a lot, Tom and I went to the Chocolate Museum on the Saturday. This is another place I had been to on the German tour in 2003/4 but it was still interesting. We had planned to have a coffee/hot choc after going around, but completely forgot. That night we planned to go to a pub for dinner where we had had a beer at on the Thursday afternoon. We walked for ages and ages trying to find the place, and I'm sure we passed it a few times, but there were no tables out the front, and it didn't seem to be serving any food. So, we finally gave up, and had dinner at an Italian restaurant, which was quite tasty.

On Sunday morning we checked out of the Hilton, and did some more walking! We went back to the chocolate museum for our coffee and hot choc, and then for lunch found the pub - which we HAD walked passed multiple times, I think it only serves food at lunch time!? I had schnitzel again, and was a bit disappointed in it. Even though the pub was really nice, I actually preferred the schnitzel from the shady looking pub we went to on the first night. While we were eating an elderly German couple started talking to us in German... We did alright to decipher that the old man had chatted for the first time with someone from America on the internet!
Cologne Hauptbahnhof
As we had both had enough of walking around Cologne we decided to go to the airport early. We thought we were doing really well catching the train and going in the right direction... until we got to the end of the line! Damn, we had caught the wrong train :( Never mind, it was a good thing we had decided to leave early, as we had a bit of a wait to catch the correct train, but still got to the airport in time for checkin (still early in fact). Once we had checked in and gone through security, we had Subway for dinner. It was then that I realised I had accidently left an opened bottle of water, and a toothpaste tube in my bag! And the guys at security didn't even pick it up! It's a good thing I'm not a terrorist, and wasn't planning on using that water and toothpaste to make some sort of watery toothpaste bomb or something....
Some people were protesting or something?!

Anyway, we arrived back in London, stayed at a hotel in Crawley (close to Gatwick airport) for the night, and then met up with Gillian and her sister the next day. But that is for another post, as frankly this one is long enough!! Sorry about that - thanks for reading :)

Cologne and its Cathedral

I had an early flight to Cologne on Thursday 25th August, so stayed the night in a hostel close to Victoria Train Station, where Tom and I caught up to catch the train to Gatwick. On the Wednesday I had planned to catch up with Gill and Ronnie, but Gill got called into work, so I just caught up with Ronnie. We went shopping as I had to get some new pjs :) That night I had dinner with them, and then went to the hostel, for what turned out to be a very broken sleep - even though I got in late and a few people were asleep, nobody seemed to have thought it was a good idea to close the curtain, so it was light, noisy, and hot :( Add to the fact that I was only there about 5 hrs I don't think it was worth £20 (notice I now have a £ symbol... I got a new computer, and it is Englishized). I'd much rather 'sleep' at the airport for free!

Anyway, early that morning I caught up with Tom at the train station and we caught the train to Gatwick airport. When we got to check-in it was sooo busy, and we had only caught a train that arrived towards the closing time of check-in! As someone who usually aims to get to the airport BEFORE check-in opens this made me a little nervous (and is half the reason I don't mind spending the night at airports). It was lucky that EasyJet were nice though, and calling people from soon departing flights to jump the queue and check-in :) I did decide then and there though to NEVER leave check-in so late!!

So Tom and I finally arrived in Cologne and took the train to the Hauptbahnhof, which was easy (and cheap) enough. It was then a short walk to our hotel - The Hilton. WOW, this was different to staying in hostels all over the place, and also different to staying in hotels in Egypt and Turkey, some of which left A LOT to be desired! That afternoon we went to the cathedral, which was as impressive as ever. I asked for a combined ticket that allowed entry to climb the (509 steps) up the spire and also to the treasury - in German, and so got a brochure in German... great it's one thing to read a sign and ask for 'ein kombikarte bitte', but to read a whole brochure in German, hmm I don't think so!! It was good getting the kombikarte though, as I had not been to the treasury before, and it was quite impressive :)

P.S. Sorry about the dodgy formatting of the pics!!

A proper weekend!

Well it's been a while since I've written, and I've been up to a bit! I went on holidays for 10 days, came back to work for 10 days, and then back on holidays for 10 days. And I can tell you that that is a fantastic setup... if only I could afford to do it all the time :( Anyway, what was over a month ago now (19th Aug) I had what I like to call the first 'proper' weekend I have had in over a year! I finished work on Friday afternoon, slept in on Saturday and Sunday morning, and would have been quite happy going back to work that Monday (but I still had another week off!!). Saturday evening I caught up with Vicki and we went and saw Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It was a pretty awesome production (of course!) but the guy who played Flick/Adam (Guy Pearce's character in the movie) had a weird voice that was quite annoying.

As we had been running late for the show we only had time for a quick Subway for dinner. Afterwards we went to a Mexican restaurant and had a selection of yummy foods and a jug of Daiquiri between us. Then it was back to Vicki's for the night. In the morning we had Pancakes with fruit and maple syrup for breakfast - and it was good!! In the afternoon I caught up with Gillian and Veronica, and we went for a bike ride around Hyde Park. The ride was good, but getting a bike was a bit of a hassle! I have tried multiple times to hire one of the Barclay's bike around London, and every single time the terminals, where you swipe your credit/debit card have been disconnected or not working. As it was we tried about 3 terminals before we finally found one that was working, and then we had to basically steal a bike off of other people, there were some many people wanting one...

After a great weekend I had a few days to relax before it was off to Cologne :)
